1st Place Finish for 6th Grade Red

The 6th grade red team continues to improve every week.  After finishing second twice and third once the previous three tournaments, this weekend they took the championship for the first time all year.  Doing so in dramatic fashion.

The first game they were matched up against Mound View.  They played their best game of the year and set a new high for scoring by winning 40-27.  As is always the case, every girl played a major role in the win with 8 of the 9 players scoring.  That is the FIFTH time this year we have had 8 score in a game!!!!!!!!!!

They won the second game against Rosemount 21-8 as once again their defense was dominate.   Again balanced scoring led to the victory as 6 players scored.  They were once again on to the championship game.  One they wanted very very bad.

The third game was a thriller.  A huge crowd of Ponie backers attended and were very vocal the entire game.  It was a  physical and extremely hard fought game.  Trailing St Paul 21-14 with eight minutes left, they battled back with defense holding St Paul to 2 points the last 8 minutes while scoring 14 to win 28-23.

After a very rough start to the year with a record of 2 and 8, the girls have worked very very hard and it shows.  Over the last 12 games they have gone 9 and 3 with a championship, 2 second place finishes and 1 third place finish.  What makes this even more impressive during this streak is who they have lost to.  Elk River beat them twice and is 17-2 on the year with 4 championships and 2 seconds.   Hospitality is undefeated (9-0) and has won all three tournaments they were in.

They are winning as a team.  7 girls average between 1.75 points per game and 2.25 points per game.  You cant get much more balanced then that.  In one contest we scored 23 points and had 8 players in the scoring column with 3 girls with 4 points, 1 with 3, and 4 with 2.   Wow!!!!!!!!
